LAKE BURTON is the great “Mother of Waters” in the Tallulah-Tugalo hydro-electric development system.  Lake Burton’s surface, 1,866 feet above the sea, is the highest level in the chain of reservoirs.

Its power plant, completed in 1926 with a capacity of 12,000 horse power, is secondary in importance to the immense Lake Burton dam which impounds the principal reserve supply of water for the entire system, insuring continuous operation regardless of seasonal fluctuation in rainfall.

Lake Burton dam is strategically located to join the shoulders of two mountain peaks at the neck of a chain of broad deep valleys.  It is 116 feet high and 1,250 feet long and impounds more than five billion cubic feet of water in a lake of 2,775 acres surface area.  Lake Burton locks up in this mammoth reservoir the flow of many mountain streams, including the Tallulah river, draining an area of 136 square miles and fed not only by the rain fall, which is heavier in this region than in any other part of Georgia, but also by countless mountain springs.

The entire town of Burton, Georgia, which nestled between the mountains which were destined to become shores of the lake, was bought outright by the Company before construction of the dam was begun in 1917.  It was vacated and salvaged before the dam was completed December 22, 1919, and has lain flooded under millions of tons of water ever since the reservoir was filled just eight months later, August 18, 1920.
